The map below is a quick, visual reference of currently permitted active underground coal mining permits. It is updated quarterly by the Division of Reclamation. Some mining activities are currently in operation, others may be temporarily inactive.

It is intended to be used by oil and gas operators to determine whether a proposed oil or gas well location may be within the boundaries of the permit area for an underground coal mine.

Select your county of interest from the drop-down menu to zoom in to the area of proposed oil and gas interest. Follow the instructions under the “Tips” section to navigate around the map.

Click on the map location to view current status, mine production figures and land usage data for the underground coal mine permit.

Select the appropriate box to overlay the section, township, range boundary layer or to show the USGS topo maps as a background.

Follow the instructions contained in the Director’s Memorandum 2009-1 to all oil and gas operators pertaining to requirements for coal seam protection. In addition to verifying whether your proposed oil or gas well location is within the boundary of an underground coal mine permit area, you will also need to contact the Division of Oil and Gas to determine whether a proposed well location is within a “mine plan area” designated by a coal owner or operator as provided under 312 IAC 16-5-4(b).
