Governor’s Summer Interns spend at least 50 percent of their time on a predetermined project that enhances college-level skills and abilities. Plus, these are paid internships! In 2019 interns are paid $11.30 per hour and college credit is given to the students if approved by their respective colleges and universities.
In 2018, more than 160 interns were hired in 32 executive branch agencies. The internships attract students from many areas of study including engineering, business, communications, finance, agriculture and veterinary science. There are also co-curricular components of the program to ensure it is competitive, reputable and inclusive of experiential learning. Interns participate in cohort activities on a weekly basis designed to enable:
- Professional growth and preparedness for the workforce upon graduation
- Exposure to many facets of state government
- Networking and camaraderie development among the cohort
INSPD facilitates internship events on the Government Center campus designed to meet the goals stated above. Events included panel discussions with state government leaders, professional development seminars like a soft skills workshop, and tours of state and community assets like the War Memorial.
To be considered for this internship program, candidates must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

Governor’s Fellowship Program
The Governor’s Fellowship provides a unique experience in Indiana State Government. The program is highly selective, recruiting talented young men and women from across the state who have been out of college for less than a year and who will serve in various State agencies on a rotating basis over the course of a year. Fellows, who are full-time and paid, participate in the daily activities of State Government, complete special projects, and experience firsthand how policies are made.
Governor’s Fellows work in a variety of settings. Many of those who have participated as Governor’s Fellows over the past two decades have gone on to successful careers in both the public and private sector- some serving at the highest levels of local, State, and federal government. They have taken from their fellowship a solid understanding of the workings of government and have gained experience in a variety of areas. At the same time, fellows have been able to give back to the state through their year of public service.
