ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Program
The ACS TQIP had their first ever virtual edition of the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) Annual Scientific Meeting and Training in December 2020. It provides educational content for trauma medical directors, program managers, coordinators, PI clinicians, and registrars from participating and prospective TQIP hospitals. Access for on-demand viewing and earning of CME/CE credit are available for free to all prospective attendees until Feb. 10, 2021. American Trauma Society - Trauma Registrar Course - Distance Learning
The American Trauma Society Trauma Registrar Course (TRC) introduces the student to the specialty of the trauma registrar and provides a standardized approach to the task of maintaining a trauma registry. The TRC provides the student with national standard definitions and methodologies essential to a comprehensive trauma registry. This course is available via distance learning. The benefits of becoming a nationally trained trauma registrar include a standardized approach for valid data collection for use in supporting the trauma program’s efforts in research, performance improvement and patient safety, and injury prevention.
- Trauma Registrar courses are developed by a group of trauma registrars, trauma surgeons, trauma coordinators, and epidemiologists. Online and distance learning courses are available.
American Trauma Society - Trauma Program Manager Course
The American Trauma Society Trauma Program Manager Course covers the role and importance of the Trauma Program Manager. The course covers essential components of a trauma system, key components of the Trauma Program Manager role, planning and preparation for trauma center verification/designation, important elements of the trauma budget, etc.
Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine - Abbreviated Injury Score Course
The Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) offers the Abbreviated Injury Score (AIS). This training covers the history of injury scaling methods, coding rules and conventions, and methods for assessing the multiple injury patient. The course is designed for trauma nurses/coordinators, registrars, physicians, hospital records personnel, and researchers or engineers who are responsible for injury databases. Participants should have general knowledge of anatomy. This course does NOT teach how to use ICD.
- AIS uses; coding rules and conventions; methods for assessing the multiply injured patient. Training includes 14 hours of classroom work divided into lectures and work sessions.
- AIS question of the month has answers to common AIS coding dilemmas along with a library of achieved questions at www.aaam1.org/faq/
- Certification in Abbreviated Injury Scaling Specialist (CAISS) provides formal recognition of AIS coding knowledge and application. Information can be found at www.ptcny.com.

Society of Trauma Nurses - Optimal Course
The Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) created the Optimal Course, taught by physicians and nurses, to assist participants in creating strategies, processes, and operations to support trauma center systems based upon their own environments. This course is highly recommended for truama medical directors, trauma program managers/coordinators, and administrators.
Society of Trauma Nurses - Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement Course (TOPIC)
The Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) created TOPIC to provide a better understanding of the Performance Improvement process in trauma care. It focuses on the ongoing assessment of the continuum of trauma care, as well as the strategies used to monitor trauma patient outcomes.
