Military Experience

Military Service & Military Spouse Professional Licensing Alternative.

Effective July 1, 2012, all Indiana Professional Licensing boards (IPLA) will consider military service training and experience in lieu of traditional licensure education and/or experience requirements for the purposes of issuing a professional license to military service applicants.  In addition, military spouses are also afforded a new alternative route to licensure in the new law. 

Military Service Applicants.  Military service applicants may apply for licensure based on their experience and training in the military and shall provide this information with their application in lieu of the traditional licensure education and/or experience requirements for non-military applicants. 

If you are interested in the military service path to professional licensure, please complete the board application and pay all required fees.  Please note on the application that you are seeking a license based on military service and experience and provide documentation establishing the criteria referenced below (i.e. military training, years of experience, etc.). 

This alternative does not preclude military service applicants from pursuing licensure through the traditional licensing process.

Military service applicants are eligible for a professional license if the applicant:

• Has completed military training & awarded specialty.
  • Training and specialty must be “substantially equivalent” or exceed requirements for licensure in Indiana.
• Has practiced military specialty for two (2) of the last five (5) years preceding the date of the application.
• Demonstrates a “clean” record, i.e. no act that would be grounds for discipline.
• Pays application fee.
• Completes all other non-educational and training requirements including a criminal background check (if required).

IPLA boards will utilize the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services in making the substantially equivalent determination.

Military Spouse Applicants.  If you are interested in the military spouse path to professional licensure, please complete the board application and pay all required fees.  Please note on the application that you are seeking a license based on your status as a military spouse and provide documentation establishing the criteria referenced below.

This alternative does not preclude military spouse applicants from pursuing licensure through the traditional licensing process.

Military spouse applicants are eligible for a professional license if the applicant:

• Holds a current license from another jurisdiction and that jurisdiction's requirements for licensure are substantially equivalent to or exceed the requirements for licensure in Indiana.  
• Demonstrates competency in the occupation through methods as determined by the board including:
  • Completing continuing education units; or
  • Practicing the profession for two (2) of the five (5) years preceding the date of the application.
• Demonstrates a “clean” record, i.e. no act that would be grounds for discipline.
• Remains in good standing with no discipline in another jurisdiction.
• Pays application fee.
• Completes all other non-educational and training requirements including a criminal background check (if required).
