"Renewable Energy" is any naturally occurring, theoretically inexhaustible source of energy that is not derived from fossil or nuclear fuel. These sources include biomass, solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, wave, and hydroelectric power. In the past five years, Indiana has made tremendous strides in the use of wind, biofuel, solar, and biomass resources. Furthermore, Indiana has used its manufacturing skills to become an integral part of these energy industry supply chains.

The following map shows Indiana large-scale renewable energy projects by county.
Due to differences in topography and feedstocks around Indiana, the economics of a project can vary by location. North and Central Indiana, for example, have strong wind resources due to high wind speeds, as well as a high concentration of dairy, corn, and soybean farms. Also, farmers and landowners may have energy feedstocks under contract for other uses than energy. Southern Indiana has hosted fewer large-scale renewable energy development due to its hilly, wooded landscapes and different agricultural mix, but as the economics and technology of renewable energy continues to evolve, room exists for future renewable energy development throughout the state.
