Preceptor Applicants

The applicant to serve as preceptor shall file a new application for approval for each administrator-in-training applicant for whom the administrator desires to serve as preceptor. An application fee of $50.00 will need to be submitted with each application.

HFA Preceptor Requirements

  • Be a currently licensed Indiana health facility administrator;
  • Have attended a board approved HFA Preceptor educational program within the five (5) years prior to applying to serve as a preceptor*. The Certificate of Completion you received from this program must accompany the Preceptor application each time an application is submitted for approval;
  • Have active work experience as a health facility administrator for at least two (2) out of the immediate preceding three (3) years prior to the date of application;
  • Not have any disciplinary action taken by the Board against the Preceptor in the last two (2) years.
  • Conduct training in a comprehensive care facility.
  • Be approved by the Board prior to serving as the preceptor for an administrator-in-training.

RCA Preceptor Requirements

  • Be a currently licensed Indiana health facility administrator OR residential care administrator;
  • Have attended a board approved RCA preceptor educational program within the five (5) years prior to applying to serve as a preceptor*. The Certificate of Completion you received from this program must accompany the Preceptor application each time an application is submitted for approval;
  • Have active work experience as a health facility administrator or residential care administrator for at least two (2) out of the immediate preceding three (3) years prior to the date of application;
  • Not have any disciplinary action taken by the Board against the Preceptor in the last two (2) years.
  • Conduct training in a residential care facility, with at least eighty (80) hours of which to be completed in a comprehensive care facility.
  • Be approved by the Board prior to serving as the preceptor for an administrator-in-training.

The preceptor may not supervise more than one (1) administrator-in-training at any given time, except at the discretion of the Board. Requests will need to be made in writing to the Board.

The preceptor approval expires when the administrator-in-training applicant either completes or fails to complete the administrator-in-training program.

Two (2) credit hours of continuing education will be granted for each complete month you have served as a preceptor for an approved administrator-in-training program.

*If you have not attended a board approved educational program within the last five (5) years, you will need to contact either the Indiana Health Care Association or the Indiana Association of Homes and Services for the Aging or Martin University to register for the next available Preceptor Seminar.
