Baby and Me Tobacco Free (BMTF)

BABY & ME Tobacco Free™

In 2017, 6.9% of pregnant women in the United States smoked during their pregnancy. Based on Indiana Birth Certificate Data, 13.5% of pregnant Hoosiers smoked during their pregnancy in 2017. In some Indiana counties, 40% of pregnant women admitted to using tobacco products prenatally.

In an effort to reduce maternal tobacco use, the Indiana State Department of Health is providing funding to 16 community organizations to implement BABY & ME Tobacco Free™.

BABY & ME Tobacco Free™ (BMTF) is an evidence-informed tobacco cessation program for pregnant women and continues through her child’s first birthday.

To qualify for enrollment, a woman must be pregnant and currently uses tobacco products or smoked daily within three months of becoming pregnant. There are no income or age requirements.

With guidance from a Certified BMTF Facilitator, women are enrolled prenatally and participate in at least four prenatal tobacco cessation counseling sessions before giving birth. Education, support and biochemical testing with either a carbon monoxide (CO) monitor or saliva testing occur at each visit. The participant may qualify for up to two $25 Walmart gift cards prenatally, one for both sessions three and four, if they are tobacco-free at the visit. After the birth of the baby, the participant returns monthly to receive support and biochemical testing and, if proven to be tobacco free, receives $25 Walmart gift cards monthly for up twelve months postpartum.

A supportive partner is also able to enroll into the program to help her quit. The partner can be any individual who lives in the same household as the pregnant woman and uses tobacco products (i.e. husband, partner, mother, sister, friend, etc.). During the postpartum period, this supportive partner may also earn a $25 Walmart diaper gift card at each monthly appointment as well. That is $50 in diapers and wipes earned within a single month by quitting tobacco products with a supportive partner!

The $25 Walmart gift cards can be used at any Walmart store or online to purchase any brand or size of diapers and wipes.
