The internship program offers professional training to undergraduate and graduate college students. These unpaid internships allow students to gain skills for employment in public history, historic preservation and archaeology. The program also helps maintain the strong bond between DHPA staff and regional collegiate faculty and students.

Interns may create and edit historiographic documents, write press releases for upcoming events, and assist in creating and maintaining historical databases and surveys.

Internships are available in the DHPA offices of Special Projects (cemeteries, historic theaters, Underground Railroad and data management), Archaeology (collection management of artifacts and data management), and National Register of Historic Places (research and writing about historic resources in Indiana).

Interns must work between 20 and 40 hours a week during their internship. Internships are offered during the summer, fall, and spring semesters. Internship hours must be completed Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., which are the DNR Central Office hours. Interns may receive academic credit if an agreement is made between the DNR-DHPA and the intern’s college or university.

Eligibility

Special preference will be given to candidates majoring in museum studies, library science, history, preservation, architecture, archaeology, public history or a related field.
